We’re thrilled to announce a milestone anniversary for the Friends of Arrow Rock—65 years of dedication to historic preservation and education! Like the blue sapphire, the traditional symbol of the 65th anniversary, together we shine with the resilience and beauty that comes from decades of commitment to our cause.
Our Journey in Historic Preservation
Over the years, we’ve successfully restored and maintained twelve historic buildings and their collections, with no plans of stopping. We’re excited to share that funding has been secured to restore the Lawless Farmstead, preserving the unspoiled boundaries of Arrow Rock. This new project adds to our recent restorations of the 1872 Christian Church and Brown’s Chapel. Additionally, we’ve revitalized the Black American Museum, ensuring that the stories of all who shaped Arrow Rock are honored. Whether you’re visiting in person or virtually, you can explore these treasures through our guided and self-guided tours. Download our self-guided tour app to enjoy a tour from anywhere!
Commitment to Education
Education is a cornerstone of our mission. This year, we proudly celebrate the 40th anniversary of our spring children’s education program, in partnership with the Arrow Rock State Historic Site and the Missouri River Bird Observatory (MRBO). Nearly 2,000 elementary students, teachers, and accompanying adults from fifteen schools participated in our April and May sessions. Our First Saturday lectures remain a popular feature, and our award-winning newsletter and publications—including books about Arrow Rock’s history and a documentary on artist George Caleb Bingham—continue to educate and inspire. These resources and many other fascinating items are available for purchase at our 1829 Museum Shop. Additionally, we are enhancing our website to expand our educational outreach.
Building Partnerships and Advocacy
Collaboration has been key to our success. We work with historical and cultural organizations to promote regional tourism and historical preservation. Alongside long-term partners like the Arrow Rock State Historic Site, Lyceum Theatre, Experience Arrow Rock, and the Village of Arrow Rock, we’ve begun collaborating with river towns frequented by George Caleb Bingham to bring his story to life. These efforts have increased Arrow Rock’s visibility as a significant historical destination and fostered a broader appreciation for Missouri’s rich cultural heritage.
